Londonderry is a city under surveillance. Helicopters circle endlessly overhead, the population are constantly monitored by observation posts and checkpoints. Compared to the level of violence of a few years ago it is quiet, but the sound of gunfire is still a familiar one.

The 84,000 inhabitants have learned to live with the troubles. Their celebrated warmth, their wit, their pleasure in living are barely diminished. They hope for peace but they don't expect it.

Their situation has forced them to think about modern society. Some of them consider that they know more about the future pattern of life in Europe than anyone else, because they are living one of our possible futures.

This documentary is a journal of one week in the city.
