Do We Need Religious Education? with Norman St John Stevas, mp and Nicolas Walter
In this series specially invited interviewers cross-question guests of their own choice on crucial religious issues.
Every school in the country is compelled, by law, to give some religious instruction to its pupils, but now many schools fail to observe this law. NORMAN ST JOHN STEVAS, mp, sees this as a danger to our social well-being. Earlier this year he launched a Conservative campaign to ' renew and revitalise ' religious education in this country. But is it right that schools should be compelled to teach the religious-and particularly, the Christian - view of life? NICOLAS WALTER, a leading free-thinker and editor of New Humanist, believes it is wrong. In tonight's programme he questions Norman St John Stevas's view of religion, education and society, and suggests a new style of education about religious and moral values.
