Pure Radio celebrates a group of men and women who made history in sound. A film about the short, happy life of BBC Radio Features 1936-1964, under their founder Laurence Gilliam who wrote in 1951: 'The feature programme is the form of statement that broadcasting has evolved for itself. It is pure radio, a new instrument for the creative writer and producer.'
Features were always in the forefront of the creative struggle in broadcasting. Born dramatically with March of the 45 in 1936, matured by tempestuous war years - Junction X, War Report and a thousand others - they came to full life in the Third Programme with The Dark Tower, The Streets of Pompeii, Under Milk Wood; and died wfth the Radio Ballads.
This film is a tribute and a reminder for today.
