' Leonardo da Vinci '
D. SCOTT DANIELL
This afternoon you will hear about one who was perhaps the most versatile genius who ever lived. Leonardo da Vinci , great figure of the Renaissance, concerned himself with almost every creative task open to man. He was not only a great sculptor and painter, but an engineer and inventor as well. Under his various patrons he turned out during his lifetime work of endless diversity, and the cities of Milan, Florence, and Rome all bear testimony to his genius.
His note-books were covered with writings and drawings, some of these latter being of diving-bells, flying machines, and submarines. The broadcast will take you back to Italy five hundred years ago, and show you some scenes from the great man's life.

Eric Smith started his professional career as an articled pupil at Luton Parish Church, and as a student of the Trinity College of Music, London. He gained his L.R.A.M. at the age of eighteen, and a year later his F.R.C.O., with the Lafontaine Prize awarded to the best candidate of that period.
He was appointed to the staff of Trinity College of Music and had six years as a school music master and as a conductor of choral societies. During this time he gave pianoforte and organ recitals in many parts of the country.
Smith has been in the cinema world for four years, at the Worthing Plaza and the Bedford Granada. Whilst at Worthing he twice appeared with the Municipal Orchestra as soloist in a Bach Concerto, and in Cesar Franck 's Symphonic Variations.

Tchaikovsky's Sixth, and last. Symphony was conceived in the winter of 1802-3. 'I have got hold', he wrote, 'of the idea for a new symphony. This time a programme-symphony, but with a programme that shall remain an enigma for everyone - let them puzzle their heads over it. The symphony will be called simply "Programme Symphony" (No. 6). This programme is subjective through and through, and, while composing it in my mind, I often wept bitterly.'
However the enigma was solved a year or two ago, when a paper outlining the plan of the symphony was found in Tchaikovsky's old home. Briefly, the outline is: Active life - love - disappointment - death. By a striking coincidence the symphony was first performed on October 28, 1893, only nine days before the composer's death.
