11.30 am Cup Final Grandstand
Introduced direct from the Wembley Stadium by David Coleman.
'Question: What common belief is shared by 970 million Chinamen and the citizens of north London? Answer: That this is the Year of the Cockerel - the emblem of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. And, if historical precedent can be influential in the 100th FA Cup Final, their faith could be well founded. Spurs win things in years with the figure 1" on the end: 1901 - FA Cup; 1951 - Football League; 1961 -The Double; 1971 - League Cup. This FA Cup Final has other historic "firsts": the first black players will collect medals, as will those celebrated Argentinians of World Cup fame, Ardiles and Villa. An earlier player from beyond the British Isles to appear was my own idol - Bert Trautmann - a German goalkeeper who played much of the 56 Final with a broken neck. He represented Manchester City - Tottenham's foes today. Interesting statistics, but football is not about the past; it's what happens " on the day" that counts. The likelihood is that City's competitive midfield men will try to smother Spurs touch players Hoddle and Ardiles by closing them down. Caton and Reid, City's young defenders, have proved themselves, but can they withstand the twin assault of Crooks and Archibald? All in all it looks a perfect match for the centenary: North v South; two sides who go forward. Are the Chinamen wrong - or will the Cock crow? ' BOB WILSON
