Part 2
Bennett's Nocturnes for chamber orchestra, commissioned by the Cheltenham Festival, is in three movements, each bearing a text chosen by the composer to suggest a mood rather than to provide a programme. Donne's Elegie XVI ' 0 my love is slaine ' prefaces the Appassionato opening movement; ' All night by the rose I lay ' (anon., 14th century) the central Dolce amabile ; and a quotation from Sir Thomas Browne 's ' Urn Burial ' the closing Dolente.
