Cornell University, New York J. D. Salinger 's stories about the Glass family have been appearing intermittently since 1948, three years before the publication of The Catcher in the Rye. In his talk Professor Mizener discusses the overall pattern of the Glass stories and relates Salinger's work to a major tradition of American literature and society-what Professor Mizener describes as ' the effort to define what one might call the Good American.'
