In 1822 Diabelli, the publisher and composer, invited most of the composers in Austria to write a variation each on a tune of his own. Beethoven at first refused but later sent a mighty set of thirty-three variations, perhaps the greatest of all works of its kind. It was issued separately from the present collection, which forms a fascinating cross-section of the period as well as a means of throwing into relief the stature of Beethoven's set. Robert Simpson
