: third broadcast
After the first broadcast of this production, in June 1961, The Times wrote:
' What we were given last night could well stand as the definitive version of that interpretation of the play which sees the tragic King as an artist in words exploring the impact of experience in verse of dazzling beauty..... The long Speeches were treated as lyrical meditations on a situation which they did not seek to develop. It is unnecessary, writing of this actor, to mention that each of them came to us with great beauty.
DURING THE INTERVAL (9.5-9.15 app.)
Sibelius
The Oceanides
Played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham on a gramophone record
