According to the distinguished German-American theologian Paul Tillich, 'the God above God' is the God of the atheist as well as of the religious believer. In this talk he explains what it is that we are to understand by this apparently enigmatic phrase.

On September 14, 1607, a frightened little ship sailed from Lough Swilly in the north of Ireland. It carried the Earls of Tyrone and Tirconnell, the O'Neill and the O'Donnell, into exile.
