* Man of mass civilisation,' said the young Surrealist writers in a previous programme from Paris, ' has made a miserable bargain. He has exchanged his independence and his freedom of spirit for a higher standard of life, for conspicuous consumption.' Theirs is a response of refusal also towards the manifestations of mass culture. One hour's flying-time away, some of their English contemporaries adopt a very different attitude.
