The emperor Asoka, who reigned over most of the Indian sub-continent from 268-232 B.C., is perhaps the most widely quoted historical figure in India today; yet little more than a century ago he was virtually unknown.
Dr. ROMILA THAPAR of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, describes how this re-evaluation has taken place, and discusses the significance of Asoka's political ideas for contemporary India.
