by G. S. Graham
Rhodes Professor of Imperial History in the University of London
In 1859 Canada framed a tariff for developing home manufactures, which British industrialists denounced as ' an act of war.' The Colonial Secretary conveyed these protests and received in reply, exactly a hundred years ago, a declaration which Professor Graham believes has been strangely neglected by historians and constitutes a landmark in Imperial relations as a whole.

by Andrew Forge
Marcel Duchamp 's painting ' Nude Descending a Staircase' of 1912 was a landmark in the heroic period. Soon after he completed it the artist abandoned painting, yet the influence of his rare utterances has continued to grow until now we see him as one of the key figures in the art of this century.
Andrew Forge's remarks are occasioned by the appearance of the first monograph 00 Duchamp by Robert LebeL
