Extracts from forthcoming volumes of 'A la recherche du temps perdu' were published in advance in the "Nouvelle Revue Française". Jacques Riviere, the director of this review, corresponded with Proust from 1914 until Proust's death in 1922, and their letters, which have recently been published, illustrate the 'strategy' used by Proust in the publication of his novel besides illuminating the personality and methods of the two men.
