The first of two talks commemorating the death of John Selden in 1654 by J. W. N. Watkins
Lectuici in Political Science at the London School of Economics
Selden, who inscribed the phrase liberty above all things' inside all the books in his library, made it also his first concern as a lawyer. In this talk Mr. Watkins considers the nature of Selden's regard for the rule of law, ' the constant and settled laws of this kingdom, without which we have nothing.'
