The Breton composer Guy Ropartz, a pupil of Massenet and Cesar Frank, celebrated his ninetieth birthday on June 15. His Flute Sonatina, which is in three movements, is dedicated to the French flautist Rene le Roy.
Harald Genzmer, who was born in Hanover in 1909, studied with Hindemith. He has written a large number of works, including concertos for piano, cello, and trautonium. His Flute Sonata, published in 1943, is in three movements.

Tides cannot be predicted theoretically. Tide tables are constructed from the analyses of past observations, but at any time the expected tides may be altered by the weather. In this talk J. R. Rossiter describes the tidal surge that caused the disastrous floods in East Anglia and Holland in February 1953.

Timothy Moore, who is the son of George E. Moore, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Cambridge, was born in 1922. At the Royal College of Music, where he was a foundation scholar from 1946-8, he studied under R. 0. Morris, Edmund Rubbra, and Herbert Howells. His Suite in F is in three movements.
