Tides cannot be predicted theoretically. Tide tables are constructed from the analyses of past observations, but at any time the expected tides may be altered by the weather. In this talk J. R. Rossiter describes the tidal surge that caused the disastrous floods in East Anglia and Holland in February 1953.

Henry Reed writes: 'In the morainés légendaires of Jules Laforgue certain ancient histories are pursued to conclusions not quite contemplated in earlier treatments. In Hamlet, which is probably the best knowh of them, the young artist-hero does not emerge wholly unscathed by Laforgue's affectionate satire. This may offend strict Hamlet-olatry a little; but English audiences have always liked their Hamlets doctored, improved, disguised, embellished, toned up, toned down, and what not; and it seems a pity to deny them Laforgue's version, which at least has the virtues of logic, humour, and unabashed subjectivity.'
