Vittorio Rietj is the most important member of the group of Italian neoclassical composers who came to maturity in the 1920s. Born in Alexandria in 1898, he studied In Milan and later wiith Respighi in Rome; his output consists largely of instrumental works and music for the theatre, particularly ballets. His Fifth Symphony, published four years ago,
. isa thoroughly characteristic work: scored for normal symphony orchestra, it as melodically straightforward, harmonically astringent, and rhythmically clear-cut. It is in three movements: Allegro giocoso, Andante tranquiUo, and Presto. D.C.
Talk by Geoffrey Barraclough
In German History — some new German views, ten essays by modem German historians edited by Hans Kohn , Professor Barraclough sees signs of ' the same dangerous tendency as in time past to use history as an instrument of politics.' ' It is characteristic,' he adds, ' not only of the present book but of post-war German historiography as a whole, that it represents only a middle-class outlook.'
