Willy Burkhard, one of the leading Swiss composers of today, was born in 1900. He studied, first at Berne, then at Leipzig (with Karg-Elert), and later in Munich and Paris. Among his most important works are an opera Die schwarze Spirne (1949) and an oratorio The Vision of Isaiah (1935). His Cello Sonata, which is receiving its first performance in this country, has three movements: Introduzione (Allegro moderate), Scherzo Notturno (Allegro), and Finale (Adagio).
