(Leader, J Mouland Begbie)
Conductor, Ian Whyte
Graham Whettam, who was born in 1927, has composed two symphonies, an Oboe Concertino (played at a Prom last year), a Concerto Scherzoso for harmonica (written for Larry Adler), and a Viola Concerto (to be performed at the Cheltenham Festival in July). His First Symphony dates from 1951 and is now receiving its first performance; it is a large-scale work in four movements, exuberant and even vehement in style. (H.R.)
