On December 31, 1917, Wilfred Owen wrote to his mother: 'I go out of this year a poet... as which I did not enter it. I am held peer by the Georgians. I am a poet's poet. I am started...' He was not yet twenty-five when he wrote those words, and within the next year he had been killed in action....
