Mayor of Faversham.....John Turnbull
Arden of Faversham was printed in 1592. It is not known who wrote it. It is known, however, that it is founded upon a particularly horrible murder effected in a house at Faversham, a few miles from Canterbury, on February 15, 1551. The play is noteworthy because, as Professor Allardyce Nicoll has pointed out, it is the earliest ' domestic drama ' in our literature: that is to say, a piece not about kings and queens but about ordinary small-town people. It was for a time attributed to Shakespeare, but some scholars now believe that it was written by Thomas Kyd. '
