Part 1
In the three movemmts of this Music for strings Sir Arthbr Bliss exploits with brilliant virtuosity the capabilities of a string orchestra. The texture, though elaborate, is never turgid; the music is, in fact, athletic in its vigour and buoyancy. The work was first performed at the Salzburg Festival in 1935 by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. Another memorable performance took place under the direction of the composer on the occasion of She inauguration of the Third Programme.
