In 1851 Henry Mayhew published the first volume of his ' London Labour and the London Poor: the conditions and earnings of those that will work, cannot work, and will not work,' which consists mainly of verbatim reports of his conversations with men and women who followed every kind of occupation in mid-Victorian London.
