Theme and Variations (Zdenka) Sonata for violin and piano The First of October, 1905
The Presentiment The Death
(The sonata is recorded)
The piano piece with the title ' The First of October, 1905 ' commemorates a demonstration in Brno, the capital of Moravia, in which a friend of Janacek was killed. The country was at that time under Austrian rule, and the demonstration, in which students were joined by industrial workers, occurred when a demand for an independent Czech University was refused by the Austrian authorities.
On Thursday some choruses by Janacek will be sung for the first time in this country. They will be preceded by a talk by Dr. Hans Hollander, formerly music director of the German section of the Brno Radio, who knew the composer well. On May 24 Janacek's remarkable Glagolithic Mass will be broadcast. H.R.

Talk by George Goyder
The speaker is a managing director and author of ' The Future of Private Enterprise.' He believes that present tensions in industry are largely the result of the survival of out-of-date notions about industry, and that it has become necessary to reform the Company Law so as to give formal recognition to the social responsibilities of industry.
