' A medieval castle at daybreak. Reveille sounds from the tower; the gates open; knights on horseback appear and ride out into the forest. The magic of nature surrounds them.' That was Bruckner's own description of the opening of his Fourth Symphony, which he himself called the ' Romantic.' In the Scherzo huntsmen are heard approaching; the Trio is a ' dance strain during a repast at hunting.' The Symphony, completed in 1874 and revised later, was first performed in Vienna under Richter in 1881. H.R.
