Fifty years ago the six Colonies of Australia came together to form a new Commonwealth, and on May 9 1901 the first Commonwealth Parliament opened in Melbourne. In this talk W. K. Hancock , an Australian by birth and Professor of British Commonwealth Affairs in the University of London, comments on Australia's development in the last half-century.
