As a result of his biography of W. E. Henley , John Connell came into the possession of previously unpublished letters from Stevenson and his wife. Drawing on these and on the available published material, Mr. Connell attempts a biographical approach to Stevenson's work as a writer, for in his view it is impossible to appreciate this work fully without an understanding of the circumstances of Stevenson's life.
