Joseph Jongen , for some years resident in England, is the respected doyen of contemporary Belgian composers. Andre Jolivet , director of music at the Comedie Francaise, is a member of an adventurous group ot composers known as 'La Jeune France.' Both oriental and central European influences have been assimilated in his decorative and picturesque style, of which the best-known examples are his ' Suite Liturgique ' and ' Trois Complaintes du Soldat.' Jean Francaix writes in the fresh, engaging manner encouraged by his teacher Nadia Boulanger , usually in the intimate chamber music forms, though he has also been successful with works on a more ambitious scale, such as his oratorio The Apocalypse. His new opera La Main Enchanlée is to be produced this month at the Bordeaux Festival.
