The first performance of Les Elements, an elaborate opera-ballet in which the young King Louis XV danced with much grace, took place at the Tuileries in 1721. The mythological associations of the four elements, Air, Water, Fire, Earth, provided excellent material for the blending of music and spectacle. The work is divided into four acts and a prologue.
The scene of Act 3 is laid in the temple of Vesta, goddess of Fire. During the night Emilie. the young priestess and guardian of the Sanctuary, is visited by her lover Valere. Distracted by his presence Emilie neglects her duty, and the Sacred Flame nickers and dies. The cries of priests and priestesses are heard in the darkness; the wrath of the goddess manifests itself in elemental violence. At this point occurs the dramatic recitative in which Emilie anticipates the horrors that will attend her unpardonable negligence.
' L'on creuse ma tombeau l'on m'y traine vivante
Et d'une lente mort je vais subir l'horreur.'
Bidding her lover farewell, Emilie prepares for death; but an impassioned appeal to the gods is answered by the god of Love, who rekindles the Sacred Flame and blesses the union of Emilie and Valere amid universal acclamation.
