Elisabeth Lutyens, the daughter of the well-known architect, was born In London in 1906, and studied at the Royal College of Music and in Paris. From the first her music showed chromatic tendencies, and the Partita. String Trio, and songs with string quartet. all dating from 1938-9 exemplify this period of her work. In the Concerto for nine instruments (1940) she adopted the Schonbergian twelve-note technique, and most of her subsequent works are written in this style.
