Some of the finest spirits of the late Victorian and early Edwardian days were to be found among the group of friends who were nicknamed ' The Souls.' Most of them were distinguished men and women in public life-the group centred around Arthur Balfour. In this talk Lady Violet Bonham Carter , whose step-mother Lady Oxford was a member of ' The Souls,' recalls her memories of them as a circle of brilliant, gay friends. loyal in affection and unrivalled as conversationalists. She describes a society whose light was extinguished when the first World War brought an end to an era marked by intellectual and social brilliance
