The Serenade represents a typically Hungarian aspect of Kodaly s art-rhapsodic, deliberately rough-hewn, or naive. Another, more severe, aspect of his art is represented by the unaccompanied Motet Jetus and the Traders, originally set by the composer to English words, and also by his recent Missa Brevis. The style of this liturgical Mass is strictly tonal and Kodaly's power is revealed here in his ability to bring new life to the old forms
