A Comedy by H. H. Munro (' Saki') and Charles R. Maude presented by Perranporth Summer Theatre
(Under the direction of Peter Bull)
Direction by Cyril Wood
Cast
Other guests and servants
The action takes place at Briony
Manor in the West Country
This play, which was first broadcast in June, 1933, is full of characteristic humour. The author, Hector Hugh Munro, adopted the pen-name of ' Saki ' from the cup-bearer in the 'Rubáiyát' of Omar Khayyam , and all his books, with the exception of his history of Russia, were written under this signature.
Munro was one of the first to enlist when war was declared in 1914. The end came in November, 1916, when he was killed in a shell hole.
It was not until after his death that his works became really popular. In England and America re-issues of his hooks were made with introductions by various literary celebrities, and soon ' Saki ' became almost a cult.
Hugh Walpole says of him: 'He had his own individual place in the roll of English literature, a place far greater, I imagine, than he in his own modesty would ever have claimed'.
