Marches of the Welsh Regiments
A Programme of Music by THE COUNTY BOROUGH OF SWANSEA
POLICE BAND
(By permission of the Chief Constable,
F. J. May)
Conducted by William Gumbley ,
Director of Music
Capt. M. F. Farquharson-Roberts will speak about each Regiment in turn from the Gorse Hall, Swansea
The Swansea Borough Police Band was formed in 1878 by Captain I. Colquhoun , who was then the Chief Constable. Under his guidance and initiative it was soon recognised as an important acquisition to the town of Swansea, provided music at all municipal functions, and played in the parks in the summer months. A succession of chief constables has seen an improvement in the playing abilities of the personnel, and the enthusiasm of Thomas Rawson , who left to become Chief Constable of Bradford, and of the present Chief Constable (F. J. May) has resulted in the band attaining its present high standard of efficiency. It numbers among its members many excellent musicians, most of whom have studied at the Royal Military School, of Music and served in army bands. The ability of the instrumentalists has not been confined to music, for no fewer than nine members of the band have become chief constables of various forces in England and Wales.
