Ystalyfera is a coal and tinplate village in the Swansea Valley, well-known for many years as a bardic centre, for many winners of the National Eisteddfod Chair and Crown passed through their journey-man stage within a radius of six miles of Ystalyfera. The village is now better known for its vocalists and instrumentalists, for it has a big mixed choir, a male choir, a children's choir, two brass bands, and an orchestra. The Ystalyfera and District Choral Society, which listeners will hear tonight under its conductor, W. D. Clee, is perhaps the most remarkable choir in the history of the National Eisteddfod. Although a large number of the members are unemployed, they make great sacrifices in order to attend rehearsals.
