Community Theatre Festival
A Commentary on the Western Area Final which is in progress at the Victoria Rooms Theatre, Bristol

The five amateur dramatic societies competing in this Western Area Final are the successful survivors of two previous eliminating rounds, the preliminary festivals held in different local centres, and, after that, of the Divisional finals at Bristol, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Birmingham, and Leicester. The winner of tonight's contest will represent the Western Area at the final Festival at the Old Vic, London, on May 31. At approximately 10.45 p.m. we hope to broadcast the last few minutes of the adjudication.

'phones'into Swildon's Hole
' Slide carefully, head first, down this narrow shaft. At the bottom is a waterfall, scramble quickly through the water and squeeze yourself through a small hole in front of you. Then on your left is a narrow ledge along which you must crawl. Keep in touch with the left-hand wall because the dripping water will put out your candle and there is a forty foot drop on your immediate right. Then....'
These are the instructions for the first part of the crawl, but there is worse to come. Four hundred feet of narrow tunnels and ' squeezes' through which only a small man can pass, with occasional deep streams, waterfalls and caves, all hundreds of feet below ground.
