Wesley Chapel stands on the site of the great open-air services conducted by John Wesley at Baptist Mills; his first service there was held on April 4, 1739, and about fifteen hundred people were present. This is the centenary year of the chapel, which was opened on November 22, 1837. It was stated at the stone-laying that the foundation stone was the very stone on which Wesley had stood to preach nearly a hundred years before.
