It will be remembered that Franz Lehar who is very highly esteemed in Vienna, conducted a concert of his own music two years ago, which was relayed from Vienna to London. Excerpts from his many operas were sung by members of the Vienna opera accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Lehar's music has always been very popular in London, his greatest successes being The Merry Widow and The Count of Luxemburg.
It has been generally held that 'Finlandia,' one of the two most popular of the shorter works of Sibelius, is based upon the folk melodies of Finland and that it actually contains examples of these melodies. That is not so as Cecil Gray is at pains to emphasise in his study of Sibelius. In point of fact, he has not made use of a single folk song in any of his compositions. On the other hand, it is clearly apparent that he has always been immensely influenced by his environment. This work is one of seven numbers written to accompany a series of tableaux illustrating episodes taken from Finnish mythology. 'Finlandia' appears to have been the only one of the seven that has survived. It dates from 1899.
