Arthur Salisbury started to learn the violin when seven and a half years old. He studied under Senor Gomez and Professor Melzak until he was fifteen, when he passed through the Royal Academy of Music with distinction. After the war he continued to study under Melzak. In 1920 he met de Groot, became his leader, and stayed with him for six years. This introduced him to restaurant work, particularly through the Piccadilly Hotel.
Salisbury formed his six-piece light orchestra, and opened at Verrey's Restaurant, Regent Street, where he remained for three years, giving a broadcast almost every week. He ultimately moved to the Savoy, where he has been for the last nine years.

' One of the minor poets of music, Lyadov remains one of the most lovable ', writes M. D. Calvocoressi. That phrase sums him up perfectly, both as artist and as man. Lyadov's music is poetic, charming, piquant, never ' big stuff '-but never swollen. exaggerated, or overstrained.
One of the most charming of men,
Lyadov was fatally handicapped by typically Russian indolence, and his output was comparatively small. For years he was supposed to be composing a fairy-tale opera, Zoryushka, but all that appeared of it was two or three charming fragments for orchestra, of which ' The Enchanted Lake ' is one.
