' One of the minor poets of music, Lyadov remains one of the most lovable ', writes M. D. Calvocoressi. That phrase sums him up perfectly, both as artist and as man. Lyadov's music is poetic, charming, piquant, never ' big stuff '-but never swollen. exaggerated, or overstrained.
One of the most charming of men,
Lyadov was fatally handicapped by typically Russian indolence, and his output was comparatively small. For years he was supposed to be composing a fairy-tale opera, Zoryushka, but all that appeared of it was two or three charming fragments for orchestra, of which ' The Enchanted Lake ' is one.
