A running commentary on the Lincolnshire Handicap by R. C. Lyle , at the Grand Stand and Richard North with J. L. Topham near the Four Furlong Post from the Carholme, Lincoln After four months' holiday from the racecourse, flat-race horse and jockey got busy again on Monday when the season started on the Carholme. Today listeners are to hear a broadcast of the first big handicap of the year, and lucky will be the man or woman who has the winner coupled in a double with a likely horse in the Grand National (to be run and broadcast on Friday), for the ' Lincoln ' is one of the most open of races. Horses are ' whispered '. but trials often tell one nothing; nothing ; last year's form can bc^| equally deceptive.
'I'op weight has been given to
Dan Bulger (9 st. 7 lb.), winner of the Cambridgeshire in 1936 ; Thankerton M (9st. 4 lb.) ran third in the Derby of the same year; Boozer's Gloom and Hornpipe, both on the 7-stone mark, have been winning over hurdles. Last year's Lincolnshire winner, Marmaduke Jinks (tipped by the Western Brothers) is in the race again with the handy weight of 7 st. 8 lb.
The race is run over the straight mile. Richard North and J. L. Topham will be near the four furlong post (half way) to report progress. R. C. Lyle will be on the roof of the Grand Stand to describe the closing stages of the race.
