THE THEME of Verborgenheit is implicit in the words 'Tempt me not, 0 world, again, Let my heart, unspoken, cherish all its rapture, all its pain.' These are Jaken from the text of the song which is a setting of one of Edward Morike 's poems. It is among the best known of Wolf's songs.
'MEIN MADEL' is the kind of song ot which we have many in English poetry. The Country Coquette, whom we know as ' The Nut-Brown Maid , is the subject of this song. The poor fellow who sings it is clearly the victim of her coquettishness which robs him of his peace.
