IT IS NOT CERTAIN who was the author of the exquisite tale of ' Daphnis and Chloe ', but it is ascribed to a Greek sophist named Longus, who lived probably in the second or third century A.D. It was translated into English by George Thornley in 1657, and again by George Moore in our own time. In any language it is one of the most daintily expressed and charm-laden prose lyrics in all literature. We are indebted to the Russian Ballet for this music of Ravel. Diaghilev commissioned him to write it to a scenario of the great choreographer Fokine, and a setting by the splendid colorist, Bakst. Ravel was thus in the highest company, and it is not surprising that Daphnis and Chloe was one of the most beautiful things in the Russian Ballet repertory. The whole work is undisguised glorification of youth ifi the manner of a pastoral.
