t A monthly series on astronomy
Patterns in the Sky by MICHAEL OVENDEN ph.D., F.R.A.S. of the Department of Astronomy, Glasgow University
Ursa Major (The Great Bear), Cygnus (The Swan), Leo (The Lion): these names are familiar to most of us, even if we cannot point to the constellations in the sky. Are they just the quaint relies of a superstitious past? Dr. Ovenden believes that they provide evidence, in a ' fossilised ' form, of prehistoric astronomy that was both precise and practical.
