Lionel Falkman led an orchestra at' Abertillery when he was twelve years old and then came up to London to study the violin. He first broadcast from Cardiff fourteen years ago when he was conductor of the Capitol Cinema Orchestra. Then for years he was regularly on the air as conductor of the Paramount Theatre Orchestra, Manchester.
In 1933 he came to London and formed his Apache Band. They have been playing at the Brasserie, Oxford Street Corner House, ever since. For two-and-a-half years they have been regularly on the air, and they are noted for the Continental gaiety of their broadcasts. Falkman himself is of Russian extraction, and perhaps that accounts for it.

' If one may say that Haydn created the string quartet as an art form ', says Joseph de Marliave in his monumental volume on Beethoven's Quartets, ' Beethaven achieved even greater attainment than his predecessor in the quartets of Op. 59, revealing the expressive capacity latent in the genre to an extent never dreamed of by earlier musicians. It is for this reason primarily that these three quartets have so deep a significance.'
Beethoven's three quartets which comprise Op. 59 were commissioned by the Russian Ambassador, Count Razumovsky, who stipulated that the quartets should incorporate a certain flavour of Russian folk song.

An appeal on behalf of THE SUBSISTENCE PRODUCTION SOCIETY
(An Order of friends) by Howard Marshall
Over 200,000 men have not done a single day's work for more than two years; 52,900 of them have been without work for more than five years.
It is this 'hard core' of unemployment that is being helped by the Subsistence Production Society of an Order of friends which, under the leadership of Mr. Peter Scott, has enabled some 400 men in the distressed areas of South Wales to work for themselves.
Instructed by experts and supplied with stock, machinery, and land, these men are producing for the use of their families boots and bread, well-tailored clothes, meat, milk, and all kinds of vegetables and foodstuffs, as well as other commodities, at roughly one half of ordinary prices. The goods they produce are supplied to members-and to no one else-at the cash cost of production.
The members live in their own homes and are asked to work thirty hours a week. They are paid no wages but continue to receive their Unemployment Allowance. This scheme may well prove the one possible solution of the problem of the older unemployed men.
