In James Agate 's recent biography occurs a characteristic passage : ' My sister, when people ask if she is related to James Agate , the critic, invariably replies : " Distaritly. He is the eldest of six, and I am the youngest." ' It is a remark characteristic of Agate himself, who writes sentences with not a single unnecessary word, and can wrap economical phraseology in an artless cloak of humour. The ability to be entertaining with no show of effort is an important qualification of a raconteur ; and this evening James Agate will show listeners what a brilliant share of this ability he has.

Last week E. Martin Browne explained the many duties and qualifications of the producer. This evening listeners will have an opportunity of hearing the producer actually at work. Several actors will come to the microphone and give excerpts from two standard plays. Some will speak their lines badly - intentionally, of course - so that their faults and the methods of correcting them may be clearly shown. In addition, several intricacies of play production will be discussed: the problem of preparing the script, for instance, and the necessity of dramatic contrast, correct tempo and pauses - and, above all, the necessity of making the audience understand and attend to every phrase of the play.

Tonight listeners are to hear the twelfth edition of this popular concert party which has been flourishing on the air for fifteen months. As Brian Lawrence for the moment is claimed by the films, a newcomer is to make his debut in the person of Hindle Edgar , son of Marriott Edgar , well known to concert parties in the North of England. Hindle Edgar was in the Douglas Fairbanks film Don Juan , and this is his first broadcast. He is primarily a light comedian, and should make an excellent foil for Claude Gardner.
Erne Atherton is to do another of her
' Lady Booming - Harde - Booming ' monologues; this time this dictatorial wife of the village squire should be at her best at a Rally of the Girl Guides.
There is to be a new ensemble' There is a Serpent among us ', words and music by Ronald Hill , who is also responsible for a concert waltz for Marjery Wyn. Then Wilfrid Thomas , who is an Australian, is to sing a Maori song.
The Air-do-Wells will broadcast again in the Regional programme tomorrow at 6.30 '
