Leader, Philip Whiteway
Conductor, E. GODFREY BROWN It has been generally held that ' Finlandia', ', one of the two most popular of the shorter works of Sibelius, is based upon the folk melodies of Finland and that it actually contains examples of these melodies. That is not so, as Cecil Gray is at pains to emphasise in his study of Sibelius. In point of fact, he has not made use of a single folk song in any of his compositions.
On the other hand, it is clearly apparent that he has always been immensely influenced by his environment. This tone poem came into existence in the following circumstances : Sibelius may well be described as the music laureate of his country and he has always been ready to contribute to its pageants and festivities. This work, therefore, was written as one number of seven to accompany a series of tableaux illustrating episodes taken from Finnish mythology. ' Finlandia' appears to have been the only one of the seven that has survived. It dates from 1899.

' Before the Big Fight'
LOUIS GOLDING
A talk on boxing in general and on the return match between Petersen and Neusel within a few days of the fight would be interesting enough, but given by the author of ' Magnolia Street ', it becomes one of the high-peak Sports Talks.
Ever since Louis Golding left Oxford in 1921, he has devoted half his year to travelling and has visited many strange and remote places in the Old World and the New. He has been an enthusiastic boxing ' fan' and has witnessed countless prize-fights, both famous and obscure.
It will be recalled that he has written many boxing tales and has described a sequence of famous fights in the leading newspapers ; and many may remember that one of the most important characters in Magnolia Street' is Kid Shulman , light-weight champion of the world, who is responsible for bringing the two sides of the street together at the great Magnolia Street party.
In ' Store of Ladies ' Golding devoted a whole novel to the fights and love affairs of a boxer, while Alf Tarle ton, who can punch with no mean glove, is the hero of his latest novel ' The Cambenvell Beauty'. The actual heroes of the great days of bare-knuckle fighting figure in many of the tales in his collection of short stories ' The Doomington Wanderer '.
