and THE GRAND HOTEL,
EASTBOURNE, ORCHESTRA
OLIVE GROVES
(soprano)
Relayed from
The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne
At the pianoforte, SYDNEY FFOULKES
Practically a year ago-on April 22, 1934-Leslie Jeffries first broadcast as musical director of the Grand Hotel orchestra, and gave as his first solo Dvorak's haunting ' Songs my Mother taught me', arranged by Kreisler. On this occasion of his anniversary he is to play it again by request.
It is a happy choice that another popular broadcaster is to be the vocalist. Olive Groves last broadcast from the Grand Hotel in December, 1933, for the third time that year. Eastbourne will welcome her return.
In the year Jeffries has been at Eastbourne, he has made a feature of ever lighter and brighter Sunday programmes, the popularity of which has been confirmed in letters from all parts of the country. In pursuance of his policy, he is to give tonight a fourth selection from his ' Musical Comedy Gems '. The first two have been recorded, and the third and fourth are to be recorded this week.
Then the orchestra will play his arrangement of selections from Schubert's Melodies-tunes that were incorporated in Richard Tauber 's film Blossom Time.
He will give as another solo ' La
Capricciosa ', by Ries-a piece he wanted to broadcast from the moment he heard Yehudi Menuhin 's record of it. And, of course, as an encore he will play the surprise item that listeners have grown to expect.
