' John Wesley ' RHODA POWER
In a letter dated October 12, 1743, the Staffordshire magistrates informed the constables of that county that 'certain disorderly persons styling themselves Methodist preachers, go about raising routs and riots ', and ordered them to arrest John Wesley and his preachers for a breach of the peace.
The charge was quite untrue. For, though there had been disturbances in other parts of the country, Wesley had preached at Wednesbury without molestation. The colliers in the neighbourhood had listened to him peaceably, and several hundred persons had formed themselves into a society as Methodists. On the contrary, an agitation was stirred up against them; their doors were broken open, their houses plundered. Both preachers and congregation were maltreated and pelted with eggs. You are to hear about John Wesley and his difficulties this afternoon.

Of Schumann's works in the larger forms, far the finest are those produced from 1841 to 1845. Towards the end ot 1840, he and Clara Wieck were happily married, after long suspense and many difficulties, in the course of which Schumann had actually to go to Jaw with his prospective bride's father. His warm-hearted admiration for his wife's gifts as a pianist, her devotion to the works which he wrote for her to play, acted and reacted on each other with the happiest results for the art of music. The first movement of this Concerto, composed in 1841, was intended at first to stand alone as a Fantasy. Four years later the other two movements were added to complete the Concerto as we know it now.
